THE 2030 BREAKTHROUGH

80% of ICT & 70% Mobile sector electricity use must be decarbonised by 2030

Why electricity? Tracking Progress

Acknowledging the organisations working towards this future

ACHIEVING THE 2030 BREAKTHROUGH

DEMAND

Energy in the use phase

  1. Data centre electricity demand will be matched by 75% renewable energy or hourly carbon-free energy by 2025 and 100% by 2030
  2. 1.3 data centre Power Usage Efficiency (PUE) global average by 2025 (from a base of 1.57 in 2021)
Manufacturing

Energy in the manufacturing phase

  1. Engage manufacturers and suppliers to transition to renewable energy to to halve emissions before 2030 and achieve net zero emissions before 2050 (1.5°C Supply Chain Leaders)
  2. Target at least 50% recycled content of materials in ICT & Mobile devices by 2030
  3. Increase lifespan of Mobile devices from 3 to 5 years by 2025. Extend both hardware and software longevity, and expand suitable business models, for example, resale, refurbishment/ repair, device-as-a-service.
FINANCE

Support mobilised from public/private finance

  1. Public/private finance mobilised for distributed clean energy technology (24/7 renewables, green hydrogen, storage)
  2. Activate RtZ Persuade criteria align public/private lobbying and advocacy activities with net zero e.g. engagement with banks and pension funds
  3. Public finance to support affordable scaling of EV fleets and charging infrastructure
POLICY

Tangible support needed from governments and policymakers

  1. Guarantees of origin for all renewable energy projects, enabling direct clean energy PPAs (RE-source), including China, South Korea, Japan by 2023
  2. Local policies to extend reach of RE through grids to reach remote communities
  3. Development of municipal waste systems that support the collection and recycling of electronic waste
  4. Harmonised global policy frameworks for the description of green bonds
CIVIL SOCIETY

How individuals and organisations can mobilise change

  1. Environmental campaign organisations highlight where more progress is needed
  2. ICT & Mobile sector engaged with initiatives across different platforms to facilitate sharing and collective progress (RtZ, RE100, EV100, SBTI (50%), CDP (60%))
ENABLEMENT

ICT & Mobile enable and accelerate climate action

  1. Technology enables scale and speed to reduce emissions across a range of sectors, for the benefit of individuals, businesses and governments
WHAT’S NEEDED BY COP28?

30 Nov - 12 Dec 2023, Expo City Dubai

  1. ICT/Mobile Companies switch to 100% renewable electricity where feasible, and where not, to engage with local policymakers to express demand for policy change in LATAM, SSA and Asia.
  2. Policymakers to create favourable renewables markets and conditions for investment into renewable energy. Including guarantees of origin for all renewable energy projects, enabling direct clean energy PPAs and local policies to extend reach of RE through grids to reach remote communities.
  3. Cities - Development of municipal waste systems that support the collection and recycling of electronic waste - for example see Africa 50 by 2050 initiative. Mobilise public finance to support affordable scaling of EV fleets and charging infrastructure.
  4. Big Tech with large cash holdings to apply positive pressure on banks to align divestment plans with the latest IEA report
  5. Manufacturers and retailers - to align with CEP and GSMA guidance on consistent industry actions to e-waste
  6. Policy and Financiers - Harmonised global policy frameworks for the description of green bonds
